I was kind of surprised they cut a new release in 2025. I compiled it for shits and giggles a few months ago, and I was surprised to find out:
- It didn't have `M-x ielm`.
- It didn't have `M-x load-theme`.
- It didn't have tab functions bound under `C-x t`.
- It didn't have org-mode built in.
- It did have `M-x calc` though.

It's probably missing a ton more, but that was what I initially encountered. Emacs from that era was very primitive compared to what exists today in 2026.

I used to be big on Notepad++ and jEdit
nowadays, I don't care that much, although they're both still useful editors

I probably should have become an emacs guy after bouncing off off vim, but I didn't feel like learning it either.

Vim because I can count on it being installed on a linux or at least vi and because I can use it without graphics over ssh or serial etc and because it's powerful
but honestly I don't use it very well

it has been a while since I've seen a system without nano
and for those that don't have it, they're typically missing so much shit I'd use that I would ideally not actually do any text editing on the system itself and would probably just be copying files to/from it

i watched a few demo videos, and editing with the structural commands was impressive.
it's also similar enough to vi that and experienced vi/vim user could use it in a basic way.

For programming GNU Emacs. For simple text files, config files, and small scripts I use mg. mg is great for what it is, it has Emacs keybinds (important), and has no distractions that would be annoying otherwise.

Neatvi is interesting in terms of what it is capable of while being a more featureful vi rather than a less capable vim. However, as much as it would be a good alternative to mg, I cannot cope with a text editor without Emacs keybinds, so unfortunately it's not an option, even though it is really cool.

Mg is my goto editor for when nothing else is available as a package, but honestly the way it mimics GNU Emacs over its MicroEMACS siblings always trips me up.C-h backspace, C-z scroll-up and Esc to end a minibuffer command, of which my GNU .emacs restores the first two. The lengthy confirmation dialog on exit is also disorienting and far more annoying in mg.
